GWO certification: what it is and how to get it
GWO is the wind industry’s shared safety training standard. Without it you do not get onto a site; it is not a formality, it is the ticket in. My reason for writing this page: what the certificate-selling websites describe and what happens at the tower base are not the same thing. What follows comes from GWO’s own standard and from someone who took those courses and has used them in the field for thirteen years.
The short answer
GWO (Global Wind Organisation) was set up jointly by turbine manufacturers and wind farm owners, and it writes the safety training standard. The core package, BST (Basic Safety Training), has four modules and takes four days:
- Working at heights and rescue — 2 days
- First aid — 1 day
- Fire awareness — half a day
- Manual handling — half a day
The certificate is valid for two years; after that you take a refresher (BST Refresher). For offshore projects the Sea Survival module is added. Before you book anything, verify two things: is the centre GWO-accredited, and does your certificate appear in the WINDA record. If it does not, the paper in your hand counts for nothing on site.
What GWO is, who recognises it
GWO was founded by turbine manufacturers and wind farm owners together. The aim was simple: let a technician train in Germany and walk onto a site in Turkey, instead of every company running its own course from scratch. Today it is the industry’s common language.
In practice that means your GWO certificate is valid on the site of any manufacturer that recognises the standard. With a BST you took at Enercon you can go onto a Vestas site. The same paper works at home and abroad — that is why you can join an installation project in another country.
GWO and statutory safety training are not the same thing
These two get confused constantly. Most countries have occupational health and safety training that the employer is required by law to provide — in Turkey that comes under law no. 6331. GWO is different: it is an industry standard, not a legal requirement. The law does not ask for it; the employer does. When you arrive on site both are asked for separately, and neither replaces the other.
There are places that hand out a “working at heights certificate” in a single day. That paper is not GWO and it will not help you at the tower base. The clearest way to tell the difference: in real GWO training you actually run the rescue scenario — on a tower mock-up, you bring down a person left hanging in their harness. A centre that does not make you do that is not delivering GWO training.
BST: four modules, four days
The core package. The precondition for going on site. The modules can be taken separately, but most centres run the four days as one block.

There is a theory and a practical assessment at the end. People do struggle with the rescue scenario in particular; I have seen instructors run it twice with someone, and that is normal.
Offshore: Sea Survival
If you are going to offshore projects, the Sea Survival module is added to the BST package; that adds a day, taking the total to five.
- What it teaches: use of the lifejacket and immersion suit, controlled entry into water, boarding a liferaft, group survival in water, and a fall scenario during transfer.
- Who needs it: anyone going to an offshore site. If you will be working onshore you do not need it — do not spend the money for nothing.
- From Turkey: there is no operating offshore wind farm in the country yet, but offshore projects in Europe pay noticeably better than onshore. If you are aiming abroad, this module is an investment.
Validity and refresher
GWO certificates are valid for two years. Before they run out you take the refresher (BST Refresher, or BSTR) and validity extends for another two years.
- The refresher is short. Two to three days depending on the provider and the combination of modules; some modules are delivered merged (working at heights and manual handling are combined in most places).
- Once it expires, you cannot refresh. This is the expensive mistake. If your certificate lapses you have to take the full four-day BST from the beginning. Put it in the calendar — I set a reminder on my phone two months ahead.
- Modules expire separately. If you took first aid in March and working at heights in September, you have two different dates. Most people mix this up and let one module lapse.
- The first thing asked at a job interview is the expiry date. Write the date next to the certificate on your CV; the technician hiring you looks there first.
Get your refresher done before you leave a job. If the company pays for it and you are thinking of moving on, waiting for the refresher and leaving afterwards keeps a training fee in your pocket. This is not a trick; everyone in the industry knows how it works.
BTT: the technical package
BST is the safety package; BTT (Basic Technical Training) is the technical one. BTT is not mandatory — but it is what separates your CV from the next one. It has seven modules:
- BTT Mechanical — main components, mechanical systems, bolted and welded connections, safe use of hand tools.
- BTT Electrical — electrical fundamentals, recognising components and symbols, sensor types, reading schematics and taking measurements.
- BTT Hydraulics — carrying out basic hydraulic work safely under the supervision of an experienced technician.
- BTT Bolt Tightening — scenario-based; preparation for torque and tensioning work with powered equipment. The step before a company’s own bolting course.
- BTT Installation — Mechanical — basic installation work under supervision. The module for anyone joining an erection crew.
- BTT Installation — Electrical — the electrical side of installation. Delivered together with the mechanical one as two full days.
- BTT Hazardous Energies — working safely around hazardous energies. This is where the logic behind LOTO is built.
My advice: if you are just starting, do not take BTT straight away. Get on site first and see which way you lean — mechanical or electrical. Take that side’s module in your second year; it will cost less and what they teach will actually land, because by then you know what they are talking about.
Other GWO standards
Beyond BST and BTT there are standards you will meet as you specialise. You do not need all of them; which one you need depends on the work you will be doing.

Is the centre really accredited
I am writing this section as the part that will be most useful to you. Plenty of places advertise under the heading “GWO training” without being certified by GWO. You can check it yourself in three minutes:
- Step 01 — go to GWO’s own training provider search. The provider list on globalwindsafety.org is the official source. Filter by country.
- Step 02 — match the name and the city. The list shows the company name, the city of the training site, and which modules it is certified for. A centre may be certified only for “First Aid” and “Fire”; if it tells you it will deliver all four modules, stop there.
- Step 03 — ask for the address of the training site. Certification is granted to the training site, not to the company’s head office. Ask “which site will my training be at”; if the answer does not match the list, the paper you get may be a problem.
- Step 04 — check your WINDA record after the course. Your record should appear in WINDA within a few days of finishing. If it does not, call the centre; this is the only certain measure of whether the paper is valid.
A concrete example. One of the centres listed for Turkey on GWO’s official register is in Guzelbahce, Izmir; it is certified for first aid, manual handling, fire awareness, working at heights and blade repair. I write that not as a recommendation but as an example of how to read the list: check the centre you find the same way. The list changes; the habit of verifying stays.
Your WINDA record: what the paper is really worth
WINDA is GWO’s training record system. Every module you take is entered there and that is where an employer checks. It is the WINDA record that counts, not the printed certificate in your hand.
- Your WINDA ID belongs to you, not to the company. When you change jobs your records come with you.
- You can open the record yourself, and a training centre can open one for you. If you already have an ID when you arrive at a centre, say so — if a second record gets opened, your certificates end up split across two accounts and that is an irritating thing to fix.
- Putting your WINDA ID on your CV makes a difference. The technician hiring you can see your validity without asking for the paper. It shows you take this seriously.
- Track validity from there. Each module’s expiry shows separately, so you will not confuse which one lapses when.
Who pays for the training
I wrote this section twice. The first time I said “it is the employer’s responsibility, do not pay for it yourself.” That was true but incomplete — it is not what happens in the field.
The rule. For a technician in employment, the BST and its refresher are the employer’s responsibility. That is the industry standard. A company that will not cover it has told you something about itself.
What actually happens. I ask people who are new on site, “did you pay for the GWO yourself?” The answer is almost always yes. Nobody does it because they have money to spare — they do it out of fear of not finding work.
And here is the bitter part: it works. When a company is hiring, it puts the candidate with the certificate already in hand ahead of the others. Two reasons: that person can be on site within days, and the cost of the training does not come out of the company’s account. Without realising it, the candidate has bought priority with their own money.
So the question is not “should I pay.” The question is whether you are paying because you had no choice, or paying knowing exactly what you are doing. The difference between those two is the difference between spending the same money and getting somewhere very different with it.
What to do, depending on where you stand
- If you are employed: you have the right to ask, so ask — for the training and the refresher. It is not a favour, it is part of the job.
- If you are starting out and not in a hurry: go to the interviews first and ask plainly, “who covers the GWO training and the refresher?” There are companies that cover it, especially when they hire in batches for the installation season. That single question can leave serious money in your pocket.
- If you are going to pay yourself, pay deliberately: take BST only. BTT and the other modules come after you are on site and can see which side you will develop on. Verify the centre’s accreditation yourself and check your WINDA record.
- If you have paid, use it in the interview. “My certificate is valid, I can be on site in the first week” is what your money bought. Nobody notices unless you say it.
- Watch the commitment. If the company pays, it may ask for a minimum service period in return. Read the period and the penalty clause before you sign.
- Be precise when asking for a price: ask “what is the price for all four modules, including WINDA registration and equipment?” In some places equipment hire or the WINDA record is charged separately.
The same goes for equipment
Helmet, PPE, safety boots. There is no technician who has not heard “make do for now, accounts will order it.” That sentence sometimes stretches into months. Yet providing personal protective equipment free of charge is a legal obligation on the employer in most countries, Turkey included.
Even so, the technician who turns up with their own helmet and their own boots starts work on day one, and that gains them a step. If you do it, do it — but do it knowing your rights. Whoever does it without knowing starts paying out of their own pocket permanently.
I am deliberately not giving prices. Training fees vary by centre, by season and by the exchange rate; a number written here today would be wrong in six months. Most of the fixed figures you find online come from pages that stopped being current a while ago. Get quotes from three accredited centres and ask all three the same question.
Physical requirements
You fill in a health declaration when you register, and the centre also sets weight and size limits. The reason is technical, not moral: safety and rescue equipment is certified for a particular load range.
- Total weight limit: including clothing and equipment, usually around 136–140 kg depending on the provider. That is the certified limit of the equipment.
- Recommended body weight: most centres give an upper limit of around 120 kg.
- Waist size: generally a limit around 120 cm, so the harness sits correctly.
- The practical limit on site can be lower. On the sites I have worked, I have seen an upper limit of around 100–110 kg applied; it varies with the site and its equipment policy. Being under the training centre’s limit does not mean every site will take you.
- The health declaration is taken seriously. You will be asked about balance, cardiac history, blood pressure, epilepsy and vertigo. There is no point hiding anything: it surfaces during the rescue scenario, and it surfaces badly.
